West Texas is a weird place where both high and low art thrives. Prada Marfa is a permanent sculptural art installation by artists Elmgreen and Dragset, and is not actually located in Marfa. Instead, you will find it about 37 miles northwest of Marfa, halfway to Valentine on US Route 90. It debuted in 2005, and being a high form of art with monetary backing, it has survived to this day.
Target Marathon, in contrast, appeared mysteriously sometime in 2016, likely installed under the cover of night with no grand opening or fanfare to mark the occasion. Someone simply noticed as they drove by on the 30 mile stretch between Alpine and Marathon. The rouge installation was infested with bees and the entire building was eventually demolished in 2020.
